Wolverine Dev Denies Using GenAI After Weird-Looking In-Game Sign Discovered

Fans recently discovered an odd-looking bathroom sign in Marvel's Wolverine, prompting people to wonder if developer Insomniac Games used generative AI.

According to Insomniac's community and marketing director James Stevenson, that's a bunch of baloney. The reason the bathroom image looks weird is because of a "UV map bug," he said. A fix is now in the works.

"There are no AI-generated assets in Marvel’s Wolverine," Stevenson said.

Insomniac's last game, 2023's Spider-Man 2, utilized machine-learning to help speed up development, and the company intends to keep doing this going forward. But for now, it sounds like AI-generated assets are off limits.

Marvel's Wolverine released on September 15 and became a swift success, reportedly exceeding the lifetime sales of Death Stranding 2 on PS5 right out of the gate.

While Marvel's Wolverine might not have featured any AI-created assets, that's not the case for every game. Activision's Call of Duty games use generative AI, as does Sega's upcoming Crazy Taxi: World Tour.

GameSpot's Marvel's Wolverine review scored the game an 8/10. Reviewer Tamoor Hussain said of the game, "At best, it’s a fun but forgettable experience that’ll entertain you for a few hours."
