Shigeru Miyamoto has been awarded a prestigious medal in Japan today. The Order of Culture is Japan’s highest civilian honour in the fields of arts, science, literature, technology and general culture. Miyamoto-san is the first video game developer to receive the honour in its history.
At a press conference at Nintendo’s headquarters, he said, “I’m a bit embarrassed”, noting that games aren’t made by him alone, but by a large number of people. He said he accepts the honour as a representative of everyone who has worked with him in the past.
At the press conference, he was asked about his 50 years in game development and the range of work he has done, from games to more recently helping develop Super Nintendo World and the two new Super Mario Bros. movies. Currently the entire interview is in Japanese available here.
The Emperor of Japan will present the award to Miyamoto-san on Culture Day, a Japanese public holiday on November 3rd.
