Rockstar North’s Rob Nelson has revealed during an interview with TGG that Grand Theft Auto VI won’t allow players to stroll around with firearms proudly on display, thanks to new changes in NPC behaviour that would make the GTA V approach seem jarring.

Previously, Grand Theft Auto games would allow players to walk around the open world carrying all manner of firearms without so much as NPCs raising an eyebrow, but that’s set to change for GTA VI. Instead, NPCs react organically if they spot you with a weapon in hand, while larger firearms will now appear on your back.

We don’t feel that works any longer at this resolution with the behavioral sophistication we need from our population now. In GTA 5, you can pull out a shotgun from nowhere in front of people and they don’t react. That doesn’t work here.

You can always have two concealed handguns on you whenever you want. You can carry two long guns and they will be visible on your back and in your hand. You can’t put both on your back. One goes in your off hand [and] one on your back if you want to carry two. People will react to you if you are rolling around like that.

NPCs are more nuanced than before, so if you just have a long gun on your back, you should be fine. If you’ve got one in your hand, people don’t like it and they react and start moving away from you.

Grand Theft Auto VI recently saw a huge info blowout with Netflix’s extended look feature, while a number of press outlets were able to visit Rockstar HQ to learn more about the game. One of the major details to come out of this is regarding GTA VI’s map, which is confirmed to be twice as large as GTA V and is by far the largest open-world in Rockstar history.

Grand Theft Auto VI is due out on November 19 for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
